Poorman’s 15 Minutes of Fame: Red Hot Chili Peppers 1988 Interview

[You guys have actually gotten naked on the stage when you played, is that right?] Well, see, it’s our feeling that nakedness is an expression of freedom. And we like to promote freedom in the world. And so we feel that by taking off our clothes that we show a representation of naked freedom.

In 1988, that would be what, 37 years ago, I was hosting an event called the Vision Pro Skate Escape in the forbidden to never be named again city at the Bren Events Center. It was at that time the world's largest skate ramp and all the top skaters were there. Tony Hawk did not win it. Christian Hosoi beat him in the finals by one point.

The Chili Peppers, the very young Chili Peppers, were the musical entertainment way before they even were nationally famous. They performed at this major skating event. Tony Hawk, in his documentary, had footage of it and footage of me as the host in his documentary about himself, at that particular skating event.

This interview that I'm about to give you, I found this interview like less than a week ago. Somehow I unearthed it.

It's of me interviewing Flea and Anthony 37 years ago, and it was for my TV show called Adventures with the Poorman, the first TV show I ever did, television at its poorest. We had a feature called Backstage with the Poorman. We would interview, you know, bands.

This is when I was working at KROQ. So this interview, it's a two-part interview. Yes, it's Flea and Anthony of the Chili Peppers, but Flea and Anthony 37 years ago when they were young guys, and I guess so was I.

And here is part one of this interview and I'll give you part two right after part one.—Poorman
